The fireplace has to qualify first
The Florida fuel gas code treats a vented gas log set as a decorative appliance for installation in an approved solid fuel-burning fireplace, listed to its own standard and installed to the manufacturer's instructions. One maker's manual adds that the fireplace needs a working flue and noncombustible construction.
So the first question is always the fireplace. We check the firebox, the damper and the flue during the free inspection and tell you whether the fireplace is ready for a set, needs preparation first or suits a different kind of gas appliance better. A fireplace with cracked firebrick, a damper that will not open or a flue that needs attention is put right first, and that work is priced on its own line.
Mantels and walls above a vent-free set
With a vent-free set, all the heat stays in the room, so the wall and mantel above the opening matter. One maker requires noncombustible or heat-resistant material immediately above the fireplace opening and limits how far a wooden mantel can project at a given height. That manual says a set that cannot meet those clearances must be run with the damper open. A vented set sends most of its exhaust up the flue, so these particular figures belong to the vent-free choice.
We measure the mantel height and projection against the chosen set's figures during the inspection. If the numbers do not work, we show you the options before anything is ordered.
Logs from one set do not suit another
Logs from different sets can look alike and still burn very differently. Their shape, weight and position are designed around one burner. Pieces borrowed from another set can sit in the flame, collect soot and change the combustion.
Use the components the maker specifies for your set, and buy replacement logs or ember material from that maker. If the original parts are no longer available, we explain the choices, which usually means a new matched set. We identify the set during the free inspection and tell you whether matching parts can still be ordered, before you spend money on pieces that might not fit.
Soot is a signal to stop
A clean-burning set should not leave soot. One maker's manual says that if soot appears on the appliance or around the fireplace, the set should be shut off and checked by a qualified technician, and that soot outside the firebox, on the walls, calls for turning it off at once.
Soot usually traces back to a log out of place, a draft across the burner, doors closed on a vent-free set or a dirty burner. We find the cause, correct it and clean up the deposits. Please leave the logs where they are until we arrive. Moving them without the diagram can make the soot worse.
