Framing a recessed opening
A recessed electric fireplace needs an opening framed to the size in its manual. For one linear model, the stud depth decides how far the unit sits into the wall, with 2x4 framing giving a partial recess and 2x6 framing a flush face.
We frame to the manual, check the opening for square and level and fit the unit dry before the finish goes on. Building the opening from a product listing alone is how units end up crooked or standing proud of the wall, and that is expensive to undo.
Room in front of the heater
Furniture, pillows, bedding, papers, clothes and curtains should stay three feet from the front of the heater, according to one built-in manual. NFPA gives the same three-foot advice for heating equipment in general.
We place the unit so the room works with that space. A sofa that would have to sit a short step from the glass is a sign the fireplace belongs on another wall, and we would rather say so during the inspection than after the installation.
Indoor units stay indoors
Both manuals we reference for this service say their units are not for outdoor use. Covered porches and patios still see blowing rain and damp air that indoor electronics are not built for.
If you want a flame outside, we check whether the model's maker rates it for that location. When it is not rated, we recommend keeping it inside and help you find the spot where the family will enjoy it most. That keeps the unit inside its listing and the warranty paperwork straightforward.
The overheat cutoff
The built-in manual we follow describes an overheat limit that shuts the heater down when something is wrong, such as blocked airflow. On that model the reset is made at the main electrical panel, and repeated resets mean the unit needs service.
