Sealing your Geneva chimney, from prep to final coat

Manufacturers and the Brick Industry Association both recommend testing first. Instructions for a water-based siloxane repellent ask for a small test area on each type of surface before general application, and Technical Note 6A suggests treating half of a test area that shows the full range of brick colors so treated and untreated brick can be compared.

The crown needs its own protection
The crown is a flat, exposed cap of concrete or mortar, and it is handled differently from the brick walls below it. The company behind one chimney wall repellent makes a separate brushable elastomeric coating for crowns, and its data sheet describes it curing into a flexible waterproof membrane over the crown.

What the waterproofing inspection looks at
