The raised collar around the pipe opening
Where the chimney pipe passes through the cover, the hole is the most exposed point on the whole top. In the Majestic manual, that opening gets a collar, 2 inches tall, soldered, welded or spun so there is no open seam. Rain running across the cover meets the collar and flows around it.
An old cover with a short, cracked or loosely riveted collar can let water drop straight into the enclosure beside the pipe. Our pros check the collar height and joints on your current top and build the new collar to the height your system's instructions require.
Where the cover skirt meets the siding
The turndown of a chase cover laps over the top edge of the wall covering, whether that is lap siding, panels or a stucco finish. That junction decides whether water leaving the drip edge falls away or finds a path behind the siding. Stucco needs particular care at that edge, since a crack there lets water behind the finish.
When we measure for the replacement, we note the siding type and its condition at the top course. Cracked trim, open joints or failed stucco at that line are pointed out during the free inspection, so the new cover never goes on over a leak it cannot stop.
When a patch is enough and when it is time to replace
A single small hole in otherwise sound metal can sometimes be sealed as a short-term measure. Widespread rust, a sagging sheet or a collar that has separated are different, because the metal has reached the end of its useful life and patches tend to fail at their edges.
We explain which situation your cover is in. If a patch is the right call for now, the estimate describes it as temporary, so you know what you are paying for and how far to rely on it.
Gaps that let birds and animals into the chase
A cover that has pulled away from the siding or rusted through at a corner leaves an opening into the enclosure. Birds, squirrels and insects can use it to get inside the chase, where they are hard to reach and can disturb insulation and framing.
If you hear activity inside, keep the fireplace unused and mention it when you book. Any animal is dealt with first, lawfully and without trapping it inside, and the new cover then closes the gap. Our specialists look down into the chase once the cover is off, so no nest or animal is sealed inside.
