No wood left under a masonry hearth
The code for masonry fireplaces says combustible material shall not remain against the underside of a hearth or hearth extension after construction. Brick industry guidance explains why builders use noncombustible forming for the hearth slab, since forming under the slab cannot be removed later and becomes a permanent part of the fireplace.
Wood forms, plywood or framing left touching the underside of a hearth is a concern worth finding. Where the underside can be seen, we look, and where a repair opens the hearth, we check what it sits on before closing it again.
Finding a tile that matches
A matching tile is not always an invisible repair. Tile made in different batches can vary in color, and the tiles around it have years of wear and cleaning behind them. Even the same product can look different once set in grout under your room's light. Discontinued tiles are common on older hearths, and a close substitute is sometimes the only choice.
Spare tiles from the original installation are the best starting point, so tell us if any are stored in a garage or closet. If no close match exists, we explain the options, from a deliberate accent piece to replacing the whole surface, each with its own written price.
Keeping the room clean during hearth work
Cutting tile, removing mortar and breaking out an old hearth all make dust. We protect the floor and nearby furniture, contain the work area and keep cutting to a minimum inside the house. Dust sheets go down before the first tile comes up, and the fireplace opening is covered so debris does not fall into the firebox.
Every day ends with the area cleaned, and when the job is done the old material and debris leave with us. You come back to a finished hearth and a tidy room.
What your written hearth quote lists
Our hearth quote names the area to be repaired, the material, the preparation beneath it, the edges and any work on the base. Optional changes, such as a new pattern or a larger extension, are listed separately with their own prices. Each item has its own line, so you can see what the repair costs, what the preparation costs and what the optional changes would add.
Nothing is added in hidden fees, and anything unexpected found under the surface is explained and priced before we go further. When you book the repair within 72 hours of your free inspection, 10% comes off the price. You keep the quote with the written record of the finished work.
