Cracked glass means the fireplace stays off

The glass front on a direct-vent fireplace is part of the sealed combustion chamber. Manufacturers say plainly that the appliance must not run with the glass removed, cracked or broken, because flue gases can leak into the room. If the glass cracks while the fire is burning, one maker says to keep the door closed until the fire is out.

Replacement glass is ordered as the complete glass and frame assembly the manufacturer supplies for that model, never a cut piece from another source. Glass replacement is its own service, and during a repair visit we tell you straight away if the glass or its frame needs it.

Carbon monoxide alarms near a gas fireplace

You cannot see or smell carbon monoxide, which is why most homes get no warning without an alarm. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission wants carbon monoxide alarms outside sleeping areas and on every level of the home, running on batteries or with battery backup. One fireplace maker also recommends a detector in the same area as the appliance.

When an alarm sounds, everyone goes outside and 911 is called from there, before anyone thinks about the fireplace. Once the house is safe, a service visit can check the appliance, the vent and the seals for anything that could be releasing exhaust. If you smell gas

A gas smell comes before any repair. Leave the house, do not switch lights or appliances on or off on the way out, and do not use a phone inside. Once outside, call the gas utility or 911 and do what they tell you.

Fireplace service is arranged once the utility or emergency service has made the house safe. Tell us what they found and what they shut off, and we take it from there with the appliance itself, starting with its connections and its controls.

The first run after a repair

We finish every repair by running the fireplace through a full cycle. The pilot or ignition sequence, the light-up across the burner, the flame pattern and the shutdown are all watched, and every connection we opened is leak tested. If the light-up or the flame still looks wrong, we keep working until it matches the manual.

Then we walk you through what changed, how the controls work and what to watch for. Barriers and panels go back on, the area is cleaned and the old parts and debris leave with us. If anything about the fireplace seems off in the following days, tell us and we come back to look.
