Finishing the liner at the chimney top
At the top of the chimney, the liner passes through a top plate that closes the old flue opening. One maker's instructions trim the plate to overlap the flue, fasten it to the liner, seal the gap with high-temperature silicone and finish with a rain cap.
Our installers complete that detail with the parts the liner system lists. A tight top plate keeps rain out of the old flue and keeps the warm liner centered, which protects both the insert and the chimney. We also check that the rain cap screen is clear and fastened before we come down from the roof.
Locking open or removing the old damper
Once the liner passes through the throat, the old damper has no job left. The manual we follow asks for the damper to be locked open or removed, so it can never close against the liner.
We do whichever your model's instructions allow and your fireplace needs. The change is noted in the written record of the installation, so a future sweep or inspector knows why the damper looks the way it does. A loose damper plate could shift against the liner, so we secure it or remove it before the liner is connected.
The surround panel
The surround panel covers the gap between the insert and the fireplace face. It is a finish piece, and it does not connect the insert to the chimney or fix anything behind it.
Whether the surround is sealed depends on the model and the air arrangement, and the manual decides. We fit it after the connection is complete and inspected, so nothing is hidden behind it that you have not seen. If the surround covers the old damper frame, we tell you what is behind it before it goes on.
Door gasket and glass care
The door gasket seals the firebox, and the glass lets you watch the fire. One manual describes a gasket that should close with light, even pressure and be replaced with the maker's kit when worn, and glass that is cleaned only when cold and never with abrasives.
At installation, the door seal is checked and you are shown the cleaning method your manual allows. A worn gasket or a cracked glass panel is a service part, and we can replace either during a maintenance visit.
