How our technicians find a gas fireplace fault

Gas pressure checked at the valve
Gas valves on these fireplaces generally have test points for the pressure coming in and the pressure going out to the burner. The rating plate or the manual gives the range for each, and the range differs between natural gas and propane. Flames that are always too tall or too small can mean the burner is running above or below its rated input.
One maker's chart also links a pilot that flutters or shrinks when other gas appliances run to supply piping that is too small. Resizing piping is work for a gas contractor, and we tell you plainly when a reading points there. After a test point is opened, it is resealed and leak tested with a soap solution.
The first fire after months off
Through the warm months, a fireplace that sits unused collects dust and lint in the burner, the pilot and the control compartment. One maker notes that carpeting, bedding and pet hair can add enough lint to call for cleaning more often than once a year.
A service visit before the first cool evening means the pilot, burner and glass are clean and the controls have been tested before you need them. If the unit lit poorly or smelled odd at the end of last season, mention it when you book so we look at that first.
Where appliance repair ends and gas piping begins
Our gas fireplace work covers the appliance itself, meaning the burner, the controls, the ignition, the venting and the glass. New gas lines, piping changes and meter or tank work sit outside that, and they go to a gas contractor, the utility or the propane supplier.
The Florida fuel gas code requires piping to be checked for leakage when gas is turned back on after an interruption, and appliances are not put back into operation until their connections have been checked too. When a repair involves the supply, we coordinate with whoever handles it so the fireplace is relit only after that check.
When a repair stops making sense
Many gas fireplace faults come down to a cleaning, an adjustment or one part. Sometimes the picture is different. A discontinued valve with no approved replacement, a firebox that has burned through or several failing parts at once can make repair a poor use of money. Age alone is no reason to replace a fireplace that can still be repaired with listed parts.
When that happens we say so, show you what we found and explain both routes, repairing what can be repaired or replacing the unit. The decision is yours, the inspection that led to it is free, and nothing is ordered until you approve a written price.
