Controlled water testing
When inspection alone cannot separate the possible paths, a controlled water test can. Water is applied to one area at a time, starting low and working upward, while someone watches inside for the first sign of moisture.

The top of the flue tile
The flue tile should stand above the crown so water on the crown does not spill into the flue. A cracked or chipped tile top lets water run between the tile and the masonry around it.
The height and condition of the tile at the crown are checked, along with the sealed joint around it. A damaged tile top is repaired or protected under a cap as part of stopping the leak, and the repair is described in the estimate with the reason it is needed.
Siding and trim on a framed chase
On a framed chase, the siding and trim are part of the weather barrier. Open joints, failed sealant and gaps where the chase meets the roof can let rain into the framing around the metal chimney.
Soft or stained siding, swollen trim and any visible water marks inside the chase are what we look for. Chimney parts are repaired by our team, and siding work outside our scope is named so the right trade can handle it.
