A flame that looks wrong
The flame itself tells a technician a lot. One maker's troubleshooting guide links a blue, lazy and transparent main flame to a blocked vent, and flames that are consistently too large or too small to a burner running above or below its rated input. Flame that lifts off the burner or curls out of the front opening is another sign to stop and have it checked.
We compare the flame with the manual's description, measure pressures if needed and check the air shutter, which that maker says must return to its specified opening. Please leave the shutter and the pressure settings alone, since both are set for the specific fuel and model.
Safety controls are never bypassed
Gas fireplaces carry devices that shut off the gas when something is wrong, such as a pilot that goes out or a sensor that reads an unsafe condition. Jumping a sensor, wedging a knob or wiring around a switch to get the fire going can leave gas flowing with nothing to stop it.
Manufacturers state that changes to the appliance or its controls are dangerous and prohibited. When a safety device trips, we find out why it tripped and fix that cause. A device that keeps shutting the unit down is usually doing its job, and the answer is to find what it is reacting to.
Where appliance repair ends and gas piping begins
Our gas fireplace work covers the appliance itself, meaning the burner, the controls, the ignition, the venting and the glass. New gas lines, piping changes and meter or tank work sit outside that, and they go to a gas contractor, the utility or the propane supplier.
The Florida fuel gas code requires piping to be checked for leakage when gas is turned back on after an interruption, and appliances are not put back into operation until their connections have been checked too. When a repair involves the supply, we coordinate with whoever handles it so the fireplace is relit only after that check.
The first run after a repair
We finish every repair by running the fireplace through a full cycle. The pilot or ignition sequence, the light-up across the burner, the flame pattern and the shutdown are all watched, and every connection we opened is leak tested. If the light-up or the flame still looks wrong, we keep working until it matches the manual.
Then we walk you through what changed, how the controls work and what to watch for. Barriers and panels go back on, the area is cleaned and the old parts and debris leave with us. If anything about the fireplace seems off in the following days, tell us and we come back to look.
