How we fix a failing damper in Slavia
When the damper frame itself is cracked
Cast damper frames can crack from heat, from settling masonry or from a handle that was forced. A cracked frame may still hold a plate for a while, but it can shift, bind or let the plate drop. Once the frame fails, the repair usually becomes a full damper replacement or a different kind of damper altogether.

Checking the closed plate with a light
With the room dark and the damper closed, a strong light from inside the firebox shows how the plate meets its frame. On a bright day the check works the other way round, with daylight from above. A thin crescent of light at one edge means the plate is no longer seating, usually from warping or rust on the seat.

A plate that rattles when the wind blows
Wind across the chimney top can pull on a loose plate and rattle it against the frame. Worn pivots, a missing stop or a plate that has slipped off one pivot are the usual reasons. Left alone, the rattle wears the parts faster and the plate can eventually drop out of position.

The first fire after a damper repair
Before we leave, the damper is opened and closed several times and left in the position you choose. For the first fire, open it fully, start small and watch the smoke for a few minutes. If smoke rolls into the room, put the fire out safely and call us rather than adjusting the plate while it is hot.
