How far the extension has to reach
The code for masonry fireplaces sets the extension's reach from the size of the opening. Most openings need 16 inches of hearth out front and 8 inches on each side, while an opening of 6 square feet or more needs 20 inches out front and 12 on each side.
We measure the opening and the extension during every hearth inspection. If the existing extension falls short, we tell you before the repair is planned, because a repair is the natural time to put it right. The measurements are written into the quote, so you can see the existing size beside the figures that apply.
Keeping the hearth visibly separate from the floor
For factory-built fireplaces, the code adds a detail that is easy to miss during a remodel. The hearth extension has to be readily distinguishable from the surrounding floor. Running the same tile across the room and the hearth can erase that boundary.
If a new floor or a new hearth finish is planned, we suggest ways to keep the extension clear to the eye, a contrasting material, a border or a change in height, while still suiting the room. The goal is a hearth that anyone can see and keep clear of rugs and furniture. A border tile or a slight change in level often solves it without changing the look of the room much at all.
Hearth repair alongside other trades
Hearth work often happens during a bigger project, with new floors, a new fireplace wall or a painted room. Each trade needs to know where its work stops. A flooring crew may be ready to lay boards the same week the hearth base is curing, and the order of work decides whether the edge meets cleanly.
We agree in writing who prepares the base, who installs the hearth finish and who completes the flooring edge. That way a finished tile edge never waits for work nobody included, and the hearth fits the new room when everything is done. We also check that new flooring keeps its required distance from the opening before it is laid up to the hearth.
After the hearth repair
Follow the cure times we give you before lighting a fire, and keep heavy items off new work until it is ready. Grout sealers and stone treatments, where used, have their own timings too. Sweep the hearth with a soft brush rather than a stiff one for the first weeks, and use only the cleaners the finish maker recommends.
Watch the repaired area over the first weeks of use. New movement or a crack that returns is worth reporting, since it tells us something about the base. You have a written record of what was done, and our workmanship warranty covers the repair.
