What goes on the wall above

A shelf, artwork or television above an electric fireplace sits in the heater's warm air. The linear manual we follow marks warmer zones above the heater and tells owners to follow the recommendations of the maker of whatever is mounted there.

We read both sets of instructions before planning the wall. If the television maker's limits and the fireplace layout conflict, we tell you during the inspection, while the fix is still a line on paper and not a hole in the drywall.

Indoor units stay indoors

Both manuals we reference for this service say their units are not for outdoor use. Covered porches and patios still see blowing rain and damp air that indoor electronics are not built for.

If you want a flame outside, we check whether the model's maker rates it for that location. When it is not rated, we recommend keeping it inside and help you find the spot where the family will enjoy it most. That keeps the unit inside its listing and the warranty paperwork straightforward.

Handling the unit with care

Larger electric fireplaces are heavy and awkward to carry, and one manual says two people are needed for some installation steps. The same maker asks that the front glass stay in its box until installation and that the unit be stored dry and free of dust.

We bring enough hands for the size of the unit, protect your floors and walls along the route and keep the glass packed until the dusty work is finished. At the end of each day we clean up and haul the packaging and debris away.

A listed unit with a matching manual

Electric fireplaces are sold through many channels, and the paperwork varies. UL 1278 is one safety standard for movable and wall- or ceiling-hung electric room heaters, and built-in units may be listed to other standards.

Before we install a unit, we look for a listing mark from a recognized testing laboratory and for a manual that matches the model. If either is missing, we tell you before the job goes ahead, so you can decide with the facts in hand.
