Decorative shrouds and what the code allows

Some homeowners ask for a decorative shroud on top of the chase while the cover is being replaced. Under the Florida Building Code, a shroud can go on top of a factory-built chimney only if it is listed and labeled for that exact chimney system.

If a listed shroud exists for the pipe on your roof, we can discuss it and price it. If none exists, we explain why an unlisted shroud cannot go on, and fit the new cover with the correct cap instead. Our specialists will never add a shroud to make a chase look finished when it carries no listing for that pipe.

A cover that dips in the middle

A chase cover that has sunk into a shallow bowl is holding water every time it rains. The cause is usually below it: a softened deck, missing support, or a sheet too thin for its span. Swapping the metal alone would bring the same bowl back.

We find out why the old cover sagged before the new one is fabricated. The fix may include restoring support at the top of the chase, which our specialists price separately and explain before you approve the work on your Indian Mound Village home.

Fewer seams on the new top

Every seam in a chase cover is a place water can work into. The Majestic manual calls for all seams to be caulked, and a cover formed with as few joints as the chase size allows gives the sealant less to do.

Many single-pipe chases take one formed sheet with a joined collar. Larger chases may need seams, and where they cannot be avoided we lap and seal them so water runs over each joint and away from it. Our specialists also keep seams out of the path water takes toward the collar, where a failed joint would do the most harm.

Covers over wood-burning and gas systems

A framed chase can enclose the chimney of a wood-burning factory-built fireplace or the vent pipe of a gas appliance. The cover does the same weather job in both cases, while the openings, collars and termination parts follow the instructions for the specific system inside.
