Veneer, joint and stone repairs for Gabriella chimneys
Two layers of water barrier
The installation guide for adhered manufactured stone calls for two layers of water-resistive barrier behind the veneer, whatever the cladding beside it needs. Those layers are what keep water that passes through the stone away from the sheathing. When we remove loose veneer and find a single torn layer, or none at all, it is rebuilt properly before any stone is reset.
It is work nobody sees afterwards, which is why we list it in your estimate. In Gabriella, the repair is 10% off when booked within 72 hours of the inspection.
Resetting natural stone in its bed
A natural stone that has worked loose is lifted out, its old bed and the joints around it are cleaned back to sound mortar, and it is reset in fresh mortar suited to the stone. The joints are packed full and tooled to match the rest of the wall. Stones that are cracked through are replaced with pieces of similar size, color and texture.

Matching the color of the joints
The color and texture of a mortar joint come mostly from its sand, and Park Service guidance notes that matching the sand usually brings the rest into line. We look closely at the old joints, choose a sand and mix to suit them and make a small test before repointing a whole section. Fresh mortar still looks brighter for a while.

Keeping new joints damp in the heat
New mortar that dries too fast in sun and heat can crack before it gains strength. Park Service guidance describes misting fresh joints lightly over the first day or two and covering the wall with burlap for the first three days to keep it damp and shaded. We plan stone work around the weather and protect the joints as they cure.

When the stone is no longer made
Manufactured stone lines change and natural stone from a given quarry can be hard to find again. When an exact match is not available, we bring the closest options and show you how each will sit next to the existing face. Sometimes the best answer is to reuse sound stones from the repair area and add the new pieces where they show least.
