Zero clearance still has clearances
A zero-clearance fireplace is designed so framing can come close to its outer casing. It is not permission to pack the space around it. One Superior manual lists minimum clearances to combustibles for the back and sides, the ceiling, the front and the chimney outer pipe, and warns that the air spaces it requires must never be packed with insulation or anything else.
The IHP guide adds that the clearances are printed on a label on each component. During a free inspection in Gabriella, our experts read those labels where they can be reached and check that nothing has been pushed into the gaps during a remodel.
How wide a panel crack can be
Hairline cracks in refractory are expected with use. The IHP guide allows the fireplace to be used with cracks up to 1/64 inch wide. Past that width it says to patch the crack with refractory patching cement or replace the panel, and not to keep using the fireplace until one of those is done.

Signs a prefab grate is worn out
Grates take direct flame. Over time the bars sag, crack or burn thin, and the grate stops holding logs where the unit was designed to burn them. The IHP guide says a deteriorated or distorted grate should be replaced with one designed for the fireplace, and that maker's warranty treats fuel grates as consumable parts.

An overloaded grate and an overheated unit
More wood does not mean more heat in a prefab fireplace. The IHP guide says piling excess wood on the grate will not increase efficiency and can push smoke out of the opening, and its operating steps start with three logs on the grate. It also says the unit is for supplementary heat only, not a substitute for a furnace.
