The shape of the finished joint matters on an exterior chimney. Technical Note 7B names concave, V and grapevine joints as the profiles that best resist water penetration in exterior brickwork, because tooling presses the mortar against the brick and leaves a dense, weather-tight surface.
Repointing normally matches the existing profile so the repair blends in. If the existing joints are a raked or flush style, which the same note lists for interior masonry, we discuss whether matching them or switching to a concave or V profile suits the repointed area. The choice is yours, and it goes on the estimate.
Plant growth rooted in chimney joints
Some plant growth carries moisture into voids in the mortar, according to Brick Industry Association maintenance guidance, which advises cutting vines carefully away from the wall instead of pulling them, which can damage the brickwork, and letting the embedded shoots dry before brushing them off.
A seedling rooted in a joint high on a chimney usually means the mortar there is soft and holding water. We remove the growth, rake the joint back to sound mortar and repoint it, and we check the joints around it that have been kept damp.

Cutting out mortar creates dust and a steady fall of grit. Before work starts, the roof around the chimney, the gutters, plantings and anything stored below are covered or moved, and windows near the chimney are kept closed while joints are cut.
When you book, mention any fragile roof coverings, solar panels, an air conditioning unit or a pool area near the chimney. Our family-owned crew plans access and protection around them, and the site is cleaned before we leave. Keep children and pets clear of the area below the chimney while we work.
