An insert tested for solid fuel
Wood inserts are tested and listed to UL 1482, the safety standard for solid-fuel room heaters. The listing covers the insert as it was tested, with the clearances, the hearth protection and the connection its manual describes.
We install every insert to its listing and its manual, and we read that manual before the visit. If a unit has no listing mark or no matching manual, we tell you before the job goes ahead, since the instructions are what make a safe installation possible. Secondhand inserts deserve extra care, since a missing manual can make the correct clearances impossible to confirm.
Repairs before the insert goes in
An insert covers most of the firebox, so the time to repair it is before installation. The manuals we follow call for the fireplace and chimney to be inspected for cracks, loose mortar and other damage, with repairs made first.
Our specialists list every repair the inspection finds and price each one on its own line. You decide which to approve, and we schedule the insert only after the fireplace is ready to receive it. Loose firebrick, open joints and a damaged smoke chamber are easier to repair while the old fireplace is empty.
Clearances to the mantel and the walls
Every insert lists the space it needs from the side walls, the mantel and the facing around it, measured from the insert body. One model asks for 24 inches to a combustible mantel, and other models give other figures.
We measure your mantel, trim and side walls against the manual for the insert you want. If they are too close, we explain whether a different model, a mantel change or a noncombustible facing solves it, with each option priced. The measurements are written into the estimate, so everyone works from the same numbers.
Permits and local inspections
The insert manuals we reference ask owners to contact the local building or fire officials about permits and inspections. What applies depends on the work and on the address.
We discuss the approval path during planning and never assume that a replacement avoids it. Any required inspection is built into the schedule, and the paperwork is kept with the written record of the job. An inspector can see exactly what was installed, since the liner, the tag and the manual are all on record.
