Keeping the cord out of harm's way
A plug-in firebox manual we follow says the cord should not run under carpet, rugs or furniture. A cord trapped under a rug can be crushed or worn through without anyone noticing, and a heater cord carries a steady load.
Our installers route the cord along a clear path to the outlet and place the unit so no furniture rests on it. If the only route would cross a walkway, we suggest a different position or an outlet closer to the unit, added by an electrician.
A solid sill under the unit
A recessed fireplace needs something firm to rest on. The earlier linear manual we reference calls for a bottom sill of a stated minimum depth in the framed opening, so the unit sits level and fully supported across its width.
We build the sill to the manual and check it with a level before the unit goes in. A soft or narrow base can let the unit tip forward over time, which puts stress on the trim and the glass and shows up as an uneven gap along the top.
Distance to the floor and the ceiling
The current manual for one built-in line asks for the top of the unit to sit at least 24 inches below the ceiling and for the unit to sit at least 5 inches above the floor. Other models set their own figures, and some wall-mounted units set different ones entirely.
Inside those limits, height is about comfort. We look at where people sit, how high the television or mantel will be and where the warm air should go, then mark a height you approve before anything is cut or mounted.
Space under and behind a freestanding unit
A freestanding firebox needs air around it too. One plug-in manual asks for clearance beneath the unit and at least half an inch behind it, and it says the unit should not sit directly on carpet.
Our installers set the unit on a firm, flat surface with the spacing its manual shows. On carpeted floors we talk through a hard base or a mantel cabinet made for the unit, so the air path stays open and the unit sits steady.
