Signs a prefab grate is worn out
Grates take direct flame. Over time the bars sag, crack or burn thin, and the grate stops holding logs where the unit was designed to burn them. The IHP guide says a deteriorated or distorted grate should be replaced with one designed for the fireplace, and that maker's warranty treats fuel grates as consumable parts.

The cap at the top of a prefab chimney
In the IHP design the metal chimney ends in a screened termination cap. Florida Building Code sections R1004.3 and R1005.2 keep decorative shrouds off the top of these chimneys unless the shroud carries its own listing and label for that exact chimney system and is fitted as the maker's instructions direct.
A rusted cap, a clogged spark screen or a shroud added for looks can all change how the fireplace draws. The parts list in one Superior manual marks the face assembly, firebox bottom, firebox surround, inner dome, smoke shield and damper control bracket as not field replaceable. Grates, screens, standoffs, spacers and grate retainers, by contrast, carry part numbers for replacement.

One Superior line keeps combustible trim and mantels at least 12 inches from the opening on its 36-inch model and 18 inches on the 42- and 50-inch models, with further limits for anything projecting more than 1 1/2 inches. Another model can set different numbers.
