When a tile rocks underfoot, its bond to the setting bed has failed. The cause may be a thin or patchy setting bed, a base that has shifted or a tile that was set without enough support at its corners. Tapping usually finds the hollow sound around it, and sometimes around its neighbours too.
We lift the loose piece carefully and look at the bed. If the base is sound, the tile can be reset or replaced on its own. If the bed is failing across a wider area, we show you and price the larger repair separately, so a small job never grows without your approval.
Finding a tile that matches
A matching tile is not always an invisible repair. Tile made in different batches can vary in color, and the tiles around it have years of wear and cleaning behind them. Even the same product can look different once set in grout under your room's light. Discontinued tiles are common on older hearths, and a close substitute is sometimes the only choice.
Spare tiles from the original installation are the best starting point, so tell us if any are stored in a garage or closet. If no close match exists, we explain the options, from a deliberate accent piece to replacing the whole surface, each with its own written price.
After the hearth repair
Follow the cure times we give you before lighting a fire, and keep heavy items off new work until it is ready. Grout sealers and stone treatments, where used, have their own timings too. Sweep the hearth with a soft brush rather than a stiff one for the first weeks, and use only the cleaners the finish maker recommends.
Watch the repaired area over the first weeks of use. New movement or a crack that returns is worth reporting, since it tells us something about the base. You have a written record of what was done, and our workmanship warranty covers the repair.
