Step, apron and counter flashing work in Elder Springs
The apron across the downhill face
On the downhill face of the chimney, the base flashing is one continuous apron. In the Brick Industry Association's sequence, base flashing goes on first, beginning at the lower faces, with tabs folded around each corner, and reaches at least 4 inches onto the roof and 4 inches up the brick.

The uphill side where water gathers
Water running down the roof hits the uphill face of the chimney full on. On a narrow chimney, a back pan of flashing turns it aside. A wider chimney needs a cricket, also called a saddle, and section R903.2.2 of the Florida residential code requires one on the ridge side whenever the chimney is more than 30 inches across, measured perpendicular to the slope, so the flow divides around the chimney rather than pooling behind it.

Flashing on concrete and clay tile roofs
Tile roofs sit higher off the deck and shed water in channels, so chimney flashing there follows its own details. Section R905.3.8 of the Florida residential code requires flashing and counterflashing where tile meets a vertical surface, installed to the tile manufacturer's instructions and the FRSA/TRI installation manual.

Protecting roof tiles during the work
Concrete and clay tiles can crack under a careless step, and tiles lifted to reach the flashing have to go back the way they came off. We plan a walking path, lift only the tiles the job needs and set them aside carefully. Any tile that is already broken is pointed out before work starts.
